Your body has two powerful glands that work together to help you handle stress: the adrenals and the thyroid.
The adrenals respond to stress by releasing hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. This is helpful short-term, but long-term stress can leave the adrenals overworked. High cortisol is bad for hormones, weight, digestion, blood pressure…pretty much everything.
The thyroid helps regulate metabolism, energy, and temperature. When the adrenals are taxed, the thyroid is too, leading to fatigue, sluggishness, and lots of imbalances.
The good news? Herbs give gentle support by nourishing these glands and helping your body cope more gracefully with daily stress. That’s the focus of my Adrenal & Thyroid Tea Blend. It’s a restorative mix of herbs that protect, soothe, and strengthen the body over time.
Goldenrod (Solidage canadensis)
Goldenrod is often thought of as an allergy herb, but it also has supportive properties for stress and glandular health.
Medicinal Benefits & Properties:
Supports kidney and urinary health (which play a role in fluid balance with the adrenals)
Mild anti-inflammatory properties
Helps the body clear toxins that contribute to stress throughout your body
Traditionally used to restore vitality and resilience after illness or extreme fatigue
Tulsi / Holy Basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum)
Tulsi is one of the most well-known adaptogens (herbs that help the body adapt to stress). It balances rather than stimulates, making it ideal for long-term stress support.
Medicinal Benefits & Properties:
Reduces cortisol and supports a calmer stress response
Protects the nervous system from stress-related damage
Promotes mental clarity and focus
Supports immune system balance during periods of high stress
Marshmallow (Althea officinalis)
Marshmallow is soothing and protective, especially for the digestive tract, which often suffers under stress. Its demulcent properties calm irritation and balance the mucous in the gut lining.
Medicinal Benefits & Properties:
Coats and soothes the digestive tract and mucous membranes
Eases stress-related digestive discomfort
Anti-inflammatory and protective for tissues
Supports hydration and balance within the body
Stinging Nettle (Utica dioica)
Nettle is a deeply nourishing herb, packed with vitamins and minerals that strengthen the body from the ground up. It’s particularly supportive of adrenal and thyroid function. If you have been told you are constantly in “fight or flight”, or you have high cortisol levels, this is the herb you should prioritize taking.
Medicinal Benefits & Properties:
Rich in minerals like iron, magnesium, and calcium
Provides gentle energy support without stimulation
Strengthens the adrenals and supports endocrine balance
Nourishes the thyroid with trace minerals essential for hormone production
Horsetail (Equisetum arvense)
Horsetail is another mineral-rich herb, especially high in silica, which supports tissue strength and repair. This herb is so good at nourishing depleted minerals for people with high cortisol levels and in “adrenal crisis” that it should be used alongside nettle to rebuild and fortify the body.
Medicinal Benefits & Properties:
-
Rich in silica for hair, skin, nails, and connective tissue
-
Supports bone and joint health
-
Provides minerals essential for adrenal and thyroid function
-
Traditionally used to strengthen resilience and vitality
