In this digestive tincture, we’re using peppermint, dandelion, licorice, and ginger. The gut houses 80% of the immune system, so keeping it working in optimal condition is vital for a strong and healthy body.
Each of these herbs is excellent at supporting the gut, but they each work in different ways…
- Peppermint (Mentha × piperita)- Is cooling and can help calm the lining of the stomach. This can be helpful for those who suffer from heartburn and upper digestive issues.
- Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale)- Contains a prebiotic called inulin and is beneficial to the entire digestive tract, stimulating the flow of bile, helping to protect the liver, and stimulating digestive secretions.
- Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza glabra)- Helpful in soothing gastric inflammation. **Avoid this herb if you have high blood pressure or are taking digitalis**
- Ginger Root (Zingiber officinale)- Stimulates digestive secretions when taken with meals, and can help relieve nausea, vomiting, and motion sickness in some people.
- Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum)- Supports the liver with a substance called silymarin, which helps protect the liver from damage.
When you are blending tinctures, it’s important to start with single herb tinctures you have already made. It’s better to blend single herb tinctures than it is to have a bunch of herbs all infused together in the same bottle at the same time.
