Herbal Throat Lozenge

A sore throat happens for lots of reasons. From a weather change to a virus to strep throat, a good throat lozenge soothes the pain no matter what the cause. This herbal throat lozenge recipe combines soothing herbs with natural ingredients to help ease sore throat pain, reduce inflammation, and provide antimicrobial benefits.

Slippery Elm Bark

Herbal Properties:

  • High mucilage content (Demulcent): Similar to marshmallow root, slippery elm bark contains mucilage, which helps form a protective barrier over the throat, easing irritation.
  • Anti-inflammatory and soothing effects: Slippery elm reduces inflammation and provides pain relief, making it particularly helpful for sore throats caused by viral infections or environmental irritants.
  • Astringent properties: Slippery elm has mild astringent effects, which help tighten and tone the tissues of the throat, further reducing swelling.

How It Helps:
Slippery elm is one of the best herbs for soothing sore throat pain, especially when inflammation causes difficulty swallowing. Its mucilage content provides long-lasting comfort by keeping the throat moisture balanced.

Marshmallow Root

Herbal Properties:

  • Mucilage content (Demulcent): Marshmallow root is rich in mucilage, a gel-like substance that coats the mucous membranes of the throat, reducing irritation and inflammation.
  • Anti-inflammatory properties: The mucilage creates a protective layer over the throat, helping to soothe pain and reduce swelling caused by viral or bacterial infections.

How It Helps:
Marshmallow root is ideal for dry, scratchy sore throats and dry coughs. By forming a soothing layer over the irritated tissues, it provides immediate relief from discomfort and promotes faster healing. It has a long history of use in traditional medicine as an herbal remedy for sore throats.

Licorice Root

Herbal Properties:

  • Anti-inflammatory properties: Licorice root reduces swelling and inflammation in the throat, offering quick pain relief.
  • Antiviral and antimicrobial effects: Licorice root’s active compounds help fight bacteria and viruses that cause throat infections.
  • Immune-boosting effects: It can boost the immune system’s ability to fight off infections.
  • Demulcent properties: Like marshmallow root and slippery elm, licorice root contains compounds that soothe and coat the mucous membranes.

How It Helps:
Licorice root provides fast relief from sore throat symptoms by reducing inflammation and coating the throat. It’s a good option for helping with strep throat or sore throats caused by viral infections. However, licorice root should be used with caution, as long-term use or high doses may cause side effects like increased blood pressure.

Chamomile

Herbal Properties:

  • Anti-inflammatory properties: Chamomile contains flavonoids that help reduce inflammation in the throat, providing pain relief.
  • Antiseptic and antimicrobial effects: These properties help combat both bacterial and viral infections that can cause sore throats.
  • Mild sedative effects (Nervine): Chamomile promotes relaxation, which can be especially helpful when a sore throat interrupts sleep or causes discomfort at night.

How It Helps:
Chamomile not only soothes the throat but also helps calm the body, making it easier to rest and recover. Its antimicrobial properties make it a good option for mild throat infections.

Peppermint

Herbal Properties:

  • Volatile oils for pain (Analgesic): Peppermint contains menthol, which provides a cooling sensation and mild numbing effect, helping to relieve pain and discomfort.
  • Antimicrobial and antiviral properties: Peppermint helps fight the bacteria and viruses that cause sore throats.
  • Anti-inflammatory effects: Peppermint reduces inflammation in the throat and nasal passages, making it easier to breathe when congestion is present.

How It Helps:
The menthol in peppermint soothes sore throat pain by numbing the area and opening up the airways. It’s especially useful when a sore throat comes with congestion and upper respiratory tract infections.

This is a basic recipe to help soothe and promote healing. Many other herbs can be used to target the exact reason you have a sore throat. For example, thyme would be a good addition if you have a bacterial infection. For a cold, add elderberry for its antiviral properties.

If you are using a berry, bark, or root, be sure to add them to the water when you are actively boiling. For leaves and flowers (aerial parts), do not actively boil them, but include them in the steeping step of the recipe.

Herbal Throat Lozenge

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp Slippery Elm Bark
  • 1 Tbsp Marshmallow Root
  • 1 Tbsp Licorice Root
  • 1 Tbsp Chamomile
  • 1 tsp Peppermint
  • 1 cup Raw Cane Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Raw Honey
  • 1 1/2 cup Hot Water

Instructions

  • In a small saucepan, combine the licorice root and slippery elm bark with 1 1/2 cups of hot water and simmer on low heat for 10–15 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and add the marshmallow root, chamomile flowers, and peppermint leaves and steep for 15 minutes.
  • Combine the strained herbal infusion with the raw honey and raw cane sugar. Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it reaches a hard crack stage (about 300°F or 150°C). If you don’t have a candy thermometer, you can test it by dropping a small amount into a cup of cold water—it should harden into a brittle ball.
  • Once the mixture reaches the right consistency, remove it from the heat.
  • Lightly grease silicone molds or a parchment-lined baking sheet. Pour the hot mixture into the molds or drop small spoonfuls onto the parchment paper to form individual lozenges. Work quickly before the mixture hardens.
  • Allow the lozenges to cool completely. Once hardened, dust them well with powdered sugar to prevent sticking.
  • Store at room temperature for a month, or in the refrigerator for up to 12 months.
