Nutrition to Support Herbal Cleansing

If you’ve been interested in doing a cleanse or “detox”, but you aren’t sure where to start, or if you’ve done one before and didn’t enjoy the process or get great results, let me be the one to tell you….the right nutrition is the MOST important part of your cleanse.

Most cleansing protocols or diets focus on purging, not replacing. You know the ones…a period of fasting, water only for 48 hours, bone broth only for a week, juice cleanses…the list goes on. While you may get some short-term energy boosts and improvements in your sleep, they aren’t doing a whole lot of good things for you.

How’s that Jen?! Increased energy and better sleep? That sounds like an improvement to me!!! Let’s talk about that…

I believe in the power of nourishing the body from within, especially during periods of cleansing. A proper cleanse should be designed to support the body’s natural detoxification systems and restore balance, but it’s essential to provide the right nutrition to ensure a successful and sustainable cleanse. Nobody wants to start a cleanse and get so sick that they just can’t continue, that’s NOT THE GOAL. Let’s go over how to set yourself up for success and get the results your body needs.

The Importance of Nutrition During A Cleanse

Proper nutrition is vital during a cleanse because it provides essential nutrients that support the body’s natural detoxification pathways, and replenishes depleted stores. While cleansing, the body requires a variety of nutrients to support liver function, enhance antioxidant activity, promote gut health, and maintain energy levels.

Foods to Consume During A Cleanse

This is a list of cleansing foods that you want to be sure to include in your diet during your cleanse. Using organic foods and grass-fed meat is important because genetically modified foods (GMOs) grow in soil devoid of nutrients, and contain remnants of the chemicals that are sprayed on them while they are growing. Those same chemicals also further change the DNA of the plant, making it impossible to get the nutrition that your body needs to heal.

  1. Fresh Organic Fruits and Vegetables:

    • Rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber, fresh fruits and vegetables are the cornerstone of a detox-friendly diet. Opt for a colorful variety to maximize nutrient intake and support detoxification processes.
    • Include leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables (such as broccoli, kale, and Brussels sprouts), berries, citrus fruits, and vibrant herbs like cilantro and parsley.
  2. Hydrating Beverages:

    • Proper hydration is essential for flushing out toxins and supporting the body’s natural detoxification pathways. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Water is very important, but be sure you are also taking in the correct amount of electrolytes. Electrolyte imbalances can cause weakness, gut upset, blood sugar drops, and other complications that make a sustainable cleanse difficult.
    • Be sure to incorporate plenty of herbs such as dandelion root, ginger root, and milk thistle which can support liver health and aid in digestion.
  3. Whole Grains and Legumes:

    • This section is up to you on whether you want to incorporate gluten products into your diet while you are cleansing. Gluten acts like a glue in the gut. The more you consume of it, the thicker that “glue” gets and the harder digestion can be. Those who are gluten-sensitive or intolerant should strictly stay away from them while cleansing. Some people are sensitive to all grains and must eliminate them completely during a cleanse. If you do choose to include them, I prefer only organic whole grains like quinoa, brown rice, and oats, and legumes like lentils and chickpeas for sustained energy and fiber. These complex carbohydrates help stabilize blood sugar levels and support digestive health.
  4. Healthy Fats:

    • Include sources of healthy fats such as avocados, nuts, seeds, and cold-pressed oils like olive oil and coconut oil. These fats are essential for cellular health, hormone balance, and the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.
  5. Lean Protein Sources:

    • Incorporate lean protein sources such as wild-caught fish, organic poultry, grass-fed red meat, organ meats, and homemade bone broth to support muscle repair and growth, as well as supporting healthy liver function during cleansing.

Foods to Avoid During A Cleanse

None of us are perfect. To be honest, in our house, we follow the 80/20 rule. 80% of the time we eat right, and 20% of the time I’m hitting that Mexican food place in town because I cannot be bothered to make lunch ahead of time. But, during a cleanse it needs to be 100%. The whole point is to clear the junk out of your body, and the better your commitment, the better your results will be. Avoid these:

  1. Processed Foods and Refined Sugars:

    • Avoid processed foods, sugary snacks, and refined carbohydrates, as they can contribute to inflammation, blood sugar imbalances, and toxin buildup in the body.
  2. Artificial Additives and Preservatives:

    • Steer clear of foods containing artificial additives, preservatives, and synthetic ingredients. These additives can burden the liver and interfere with cleansing processes.
  3. Trans Fats and Hydrogenated Oils:

    • Eliminate foods high in trans fats and hydrogenated oils, such as fried foods, packaged snacks, and commercially baked goods. These unhealthy fats can impair liver function and promote inflammation.
  4. Alcohol and Caffeine:

    • Avoid alcohol and caffeine during cleansing. They can stress the liver and interfere with the body’s ability to eliminate toxins effectively. Instead, choose herbal teas and non-alcoholic beverages.
  5. Allergenic Foods:

    • If you suspect food sensitivities or allergies, eliminate common allergy foods such as gluten, dairy, soy, and nuts during your cleanse to reduce inflammation and support gut health. After your cleanse you can reintroduce these food groups one at a time, one group per week. This will make it a lot easier to identify food triggers.

Health Benefits of Herbal Cleansing

There’s no doubt that doing the occasional herbal cleanse offers multiple benefits. Because our bodies are all different and we have different motivations for doing an herbal cleanse, our results will be different. Some things will be universal though:

  1. Elimination of Toxins:

    • Herbal detoxification supports the body’s natural processes of eliminating toxins, including heavy metals, toxic substances, free radicals, and oxidative stress. By incorporating detoxifying herbs and nutrient-rich foods, you can enhance the body’s ability to purge environmental toxins, harmful bacteria, and other harmful toxins.
  2. Support for Liver Health:

    • The liver plays a central role in detoxification, metabolizing toxins and waste products to be excreted from the body. Herbal detox approaches, such as chelation therapy, can help support liver function and optimize its detoxification capacity.
  3. Enhanced Antioxidant Activity:

    • Many herbs and foods rich in antioxidants help combat oxidative stress and neutralize free radicals, which can damage cells and contribute to chronic disease. By including antioxidant-rich ingredients in your detox regimen, you can support cellular health and reduce inflammation.
  4. Improved Digestion:

    • Herbal detoxification can promote gastrointestinal health by supporting digestion, reducing bloating and gas, and enhancing nutrient absorption. By incorporating gut-friendly foods and herbs, you can soothe digestive discomfort and restore balance to the digestive system.
  5. Increased Energy:

    • As toxins are eliminated and the body’s natural detoxification systems are supported, it’s common to experience increased energy levels, improved mood, better sleep, and clearer focus.
  6. Healthier Immune System:
    • Over 80% of the body’s immune system is located in the gut. When your gut is cleansed of toxins and sludge, it’s free to work optimally. That means everything the gut is responsible for works optimally, too. A healthy gut means a healthy body.

Things To Consider

Before you begin an herbal cleanse, you need to be sure it is safe to do so. Even with a gentle cleanse, you will be purging your system of foreign contaminants. Be sure to look into each herb you would like to use, and ensure there are no contraindications with any medical conditions or medications you may be on. You should also speak with your medical team before you begin a cleanse to be sure it is safe for you to do so.

Remember to listen to your body’s cues as you go through this process and adjust as necessary. Remember that this is a journey and not a quick fix. You will find that some changes need to be temporary as you purge your system, and some may need to be permanent to maintain your health and wellness.
